Jean Burgess is Associate Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S), co-leader of the data program, and convenor of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Node. She is a Professor of Digital Media in the QUT Digital Media Research Centre (DMRC) and School of Communication, and a current member of the ARC College of Experts. Most recently, she led the establishment and was founding director of the QUT Digital Media Research Centre from 2015-2020.
Her research focuses on the social implications of digital media technologies, platforms and cultures, as well as new and innovative digital methods for studying them. In addition to more than 100 articles and chapters, she is an author or editor of six books, the latest of which is Twitter – A Biography (with Nancy Baym, New York University Press, 2020).
She has held a number of ARC Discovery and Linkage grants and has partnered successfully with a range of Australian and international government, industry and community organisations to address the practical challenges and opportunities posed by digital and social media.
