Washing machines can be a bit of a grudge purchase. There are definitely far more enjoyable ways to spend hundreds – or even thousands – of dollars.

But spending more money won't necessarily buy you a better washing machine: there are plenty of more affordable models on the market that performed well in our lab tests, matching or even beating more expensive machines.

There are plenty of affordable models on the market that performed well in our lab tests

In fact, of the 18 front loaders our experts recommend, 12 of them cost less than $1500 – so if you check our detailed washing machine reviews before you buy you can save yourself hundreds on a new front loader.

"It's important to consider both price and performance when buying a new front loader," says CHOICE whitegoods expert Denis Gallagher

"While there are some great performers at the cheaper end of the scale, there are also some duds – this is why it's vital to do your research before handing over your credit card."

Are front loader washing machines worth the extra money?

Front loaders are generally a bit more expensive than top loaders, due to how they're built.

But although you'll pay more upfront for a front loader, you'll generally pay less in water and electricity bills over the entire life of the appliance, so it could end up costing about the same or even less in the long run.

While you'll pay more upfront for a front loader, you'll generally pay less in water and electricity bills

Not to mention that front loaders are more gentle on your clothes than top loaders, so you won't have to replace your favourite t-shirts as quickly if you use a front loader – that's more savings!

But that doesn't mean you need to spend a fortune for a great-performing front-loading washing machine.

Exclusively for CHOICE members, we'll reveal five machines that deliver great performance on a budget.

If you just want to get straight to the best products, you can jump to the results now.

The front loader washing machines not to buy

Knowing what not to buy can be just as useful as knowing what to buy. Here are the washing machines our experts rated the lowest.

You'll notice that they're all priced under $1500 – but even at these low prices, our experts don't recommend them.

The best washing machine brands in Australia

Here are the best brands for 2024, along with their CHOICE Best Brand scores:

  1. Miele – 82%
  2. LG – 79%

Miele has taken out the Best Brand washing machine prize for six years in a row, sharing the top spot with LG in 2019.

…but don't buy on brand alone

While the four brands above have well-founded reputations, here at CHOICE we know that buying based on brand alone is sometimes a recipe for disappointment. Even the best brand sometimes delivers duds.

And focusing solely on one brand in your search for the perfect appliance can mean you overlook other products offering comparable performance for a much smaller price tag.

Even the best brand sometimes delivers duds

Machines from the same brand can vary widely in terms of performance, features, capacity, energy efficiency and more, so don't assume that all products from a reputable manufacturer will give you what you want.

The best thing to do is to focus on individual models by checking CHOICE reviews to find the best washing machines before you buy.

The most reliable washing machine brands

We sent out a survey to 1452 CHOICE members who own a washing machine to find out which washer brands are the most reliable.

We asked members about whether they've run into any problems with their washing machine in the previous 12 months. We also take into account the age of the products so we can compare fairly between brands.

The most reliable washing machine brand for 2023 is Bosch, followed by LG, Samsung and Miele.

(Note that the survey doesn't distinguish between top and front loaders; these results are based on washing machines more generally rather than specific machine types.)

What are the best front loader washing machines under $1500?

lg wv9 1610w

The LG WV-9-1610W.

LG WV9-1610W

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 78%
  • Capacity: 10kg
  • Price: $1299

In terms of washing machines, LG is a solid brand: it sits in second place in the rankings for the latest front loaders Best Brand and most reliable washing machine brand, and its average test scores for front loaders is 73%.

And this 10kg front loader is no exception: it's the highest scoring washer overall in our review, trumping every other machine – even those costing $2000 and more.

It's also the cheapest to run of all the sub-$1500 models in this list, uses the least amount of water and energy, and has the shortest cycle time. Sounds like a winner to us.

It wasn't the highest scoring model in terms of dirt removal (that honour goes to the $1499 LG below), but with a price and overall performance like this, it's definitely one to add to your shortlist.

A note about cycle times:

"Front loaders tend to have longer cycle times than top loaders because they use less water. But a default wash cycle shouldn't take longer than a Sydney to Perth flight," says Denis.

"CHOICE has been calling out the washing machine industry for delivering machines that take too long to get your clothes clean, so we penalise models with excessively long cycle times.

"Our top overall performer does the job in less than 90 minutes and uses less water and power than the other recommended models. However, the early versions of this model don't deliver the fast times and better performance – so make sure if you are shopping for this model that it was produced after 23/08/24 and has a serial number starting with 408PNxxxxxxx."

westinghouse wwf9024m5wa

The Westinghouse WWF9024M5WA.

Westinghouse WWF9024M5WA

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 76%
  • Capacity: 9kg
  • Price: $849

While Westinghouse didn't make the cut in our Best Brand list, this machine is one of the top front loaders under $1500.

It just goes to show that buying on brand alone means you could miss out on a great machine at a great price.

It'll take the strain off your power bills, your wallet, your time and your ears: it's a winner all round!

The WWF9024M5WA will get your clothes clean effectively, cheaply, quietly and quickly. Aside from being the second-top scorer in this list, it's also the second-cheapest to run and one of the quietest.

It has a reasonably short cycle time (110 minutes) compared to other front loaders, but still manages to get clothes cleaner than some machines that wash for longer.

So to recap: it'll take the strain off your power bills, your wallet, your time and your ears. It's a winner all round!

bosch wga254u0au

The Bosch WGA254U0AU.

Bosch WGA254U0AU

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 75%
  • Capacity: 10kg
  • Price: $1149

Bosch was named the most reliable washing machine brand for 2023, and this model is another top pick of the sub-$1500 bunch.

It's energy-efficient, lets you add items after the cycle has started (a feature sometimes lacking in front loaders), and the Bosch brand is also one of the front runners in our Best Brand recommendations, tying with LG for second place.

Bosch was named the most reliable washing machine brand for 2023, and this model is another top pick

The only downside to this machine is that it has a very long cycle time of 159 minutes (that's more than 2.5 hours), which our experts marked it down on.

But with such good performance at such a low price, we think it's worth the time investment.

electrolux ewf8024q5wb

The Electrolux EWF8024Q5WB.

Electrolux EWF8024Q5WB

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 75%
  • Capacity: 8kg
  • Price: $999

This Electrolux definitely delivers great bang for your buck, hitting the sweet spot between price and performance.

It's also relatively cheap of the to run: we estimate that it'll set you back around $730 over 10 years – so the savings will continue long after you've bought it.

And with a relatively short cycle time of 120 minutes (short for front loaders, that is), it'll also save you time.

It punches well above its weight, scoring as well as some models that cost well over $2000

Unfortunately, it is one of the thirstier of the high-scoring machines in our review, using 65 litres per wash. But compared to top loaders that can use more than 100L per load, it's still relatively thrifty on the H2O.

All in all, the EWF8024Q5WB punches well above its weight, scoring as well as some models that cost well over $2000, so it's well worth a look.

lg wv9 1412w

The LG WV9-1412W.

LG WV9-1412W

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 75%
  • Capacity: 12kg
  • Price: $1499

This LG sits at the top of the price range for our cheaper options, but it does deliver great performance for the price.

Its results for dirt removal, water efficiency, rinse performance and water efficiency were all impressive.

This LG delivers great performance for the price

Unfortunately, it does have an excruciatingly long cycle time of 278 minutes, and it's relatively expensive to run, so consider these factors if you're thinking of buying it.
