We put trampolines through expert testing to find the models that are safe, durable and easy to use. Of the 10 models tested, all but two had serious failures.

  • We test them to the Australian standard for trampolines, AS 4989:2015, for structural strength and durability, how well the padding and enclosure protect against impacts, head entrapment gaps, and more.
  • We also assess how easy the instructions are to follow and how easy the trampolines are to assemble.
  • The Australian trampoline standard is only voluntary: trampolines don't have to pass it to be sold in Australia. Sign our petition for stronger product safety laws.

CHOICE is an independent, nonprofit organisation dedicated to helping consumers. Clicking a link will take you to a retailer's website to shop. While we make money if you buy through some retailer links, this doesn't influence any of our rankings. 100% of the money we make goes straight back into our nonprofit mission. We're currently testing this service and will consider providing more shopping links in the future. Tell us what you think.

Our test is based on the Australian Standard for trampolines, AS 4989:2015. It covers key structural and safety tests, including:

  • structural integrity: how well the trampoline holds up to stress tests on the frame and enclosure
  • impact test: how well the padding and enclosure absorb the impact of someone colliding with them; they need to safely absorb the energy of the impact without becoming damaged in the process
  • head entrapment hazards, and pinching, crushing or shearing hazards in various components accessible to a child
  • marking and safety information.

We also assess how clear and comprehensive the instructions are, how easy the trampoline is to assemble and move around, and how easy it is to enter and exit the enclosure. The testers rate the bounce quality of the trampolines, though that's not factored into the overall score.

"Spring" means the trampoline has the traditional set of springs and padding around the mat edge. "Springless" models have a different mechanism such as rubber bands instead of metal springs, or vertical rods or leaf springs around the frame edge below the jumping surface, so they are much less likely to cause injury. This can also give a different feel to the bounce of the mat; the bounce is more focused in the centre and there's relatively little bounce at the mat edge.

      Number of serious failures

      Expand to view more details.

Serious failures include any failures to the standard tests for structural integrity; failures for impact testing, which test whether the pads and enclosure can safely absorb the energy of a user landing on them without making the impact too hard, or getting damaged; and head and limb entrapment hazards inside the play area.

Based on testing to the Australian standard AS 4989:2015, covering structural strength, impact safety and checks for entrapment hazards in the trampoline frame and enclosure. The more failures, the lower the score. A score of 80% indicates the model has only very minor failures while 100% means no failures at all.

Based on the quality of the supplied instructions for assembly and use; ease of assembly; the ease of using the entry/exit to the net enclosure; and how easy the trampoline is to move to a different location once assembled.
